Introduction of outreach program includes:
1. Look good feel better. This is a cancer patient drive to enable woman, undergoing active cancer treatments to feel better about themselves through a beauty therapy workshop. Sponsored by the cosmetic, toiletries and fragrances industry, we go into hospitals, clinics and give free workshops to these ladies. The products are given to the patients to keep and use.
Each hamper includes a full skin care and make up range. During the workshop the ladies are taught how to use each product and participate in the workshop. This knowledge they take home with them and use to help themselves forget cancer for 10 minutes a day and take an active interest in their own appearance during this difficult time. The Academy is proud to be involved in the new Durban branch and staff and students participated in the launch workshop at Parklands Hospital.
2. Grandma's pamper day. Every three months in association with rotary,, the Academy sponsors a day for our very mature ladies to relax, chat and be indulged by the students of the Academy. Rotary kindly supply eats for the ladies and the students offer what ever treatment takes the old dear's fancy. For many of these senior citizens this contact point is one of the only ones they will experience in a month and they “ count sleeps' until it is there turn to attend an Academy Day. For the students it provides life perspective and an opportunity to work on conditions of the skin and hands they may not otherwise encounter. They also enjoy talking to the clients and mixing with a different generation to their own.
Assisting with make up at local school plays and sponsoring the massage tent at the end of the Thomas Moore Big Walk acts as key bonding experiences for students while providing a fun filled work experience environment that extends them in ways salon training never can.
